Program Structure

Having had a formal dance education through Eastern Michigan University, as well as several teaching certifications in Ballroom & Brazilian Zouk, our studio owner values pedagogy - the art of teaching - immensely! We also know our students have busy lives, and that can make it hard to be consistent or commit 100% to one's hobbies. Urbanity's program structure is very unique in that it offers quality progressive learning while still being flexible. Read up on our cycle format for partner dances and leveled learning for solo dances below!

Urbanity FAQs

Do I need previous dance experience to join a class?

No, everyone at all skill levels is welcome to join! We have a variety of class levels from Fundamentals/Beginner to Intermediate/Open-level Choreography (more advanced). Click here to learn more about our program structure.

If I have previous dance experience, do I need to sign up for a Fundamentals/Beginner class as my starting point?

No. If you’re unsure which level/class to join, we recommend purchasing our Unlimited 2-Week Trial Pass. With it, you’ll receive access to all classes for week 1 and 2 of your chosen 4-week session. That way, you can get a better understanding of how classes are structured and where you feel comfortable within your skill level.

Any further questions about class-level placements can be directed to info@urbanitydancechicago.com.

Where can I learn more about each dance style?

Visit our website to learn more about each dance style offered at our studio. We offer classes in bachata, ballet, cumbia, hip hop, kizomba, salsa, zouk and more. We also consistently offer special 6-week series covering topics such as body movement for partnerwork and solo style techniques.

Check out our upcoming events and join us for a dance social to see all the styles in action. We’re proud to host the only All Styles Social in the city where we include all styles (bachata, cumbia, kizomba, salsa and zouk) in one event!

Where can I find the schedule for classes?

Each month’s class schedule is posted on our website.

You can also follow us on Instagram and like us on Facebook for updates on when we post the following month’s schedule.

How much do classes cost? How do I pay for classes?

We offer multiple options for purchasing classes including deals for new students, pay as you go, and 3 month+ commitment offers. Visit our website to view the full list of options.

To sign up for classes, find the class on the schedule posted on our website and select “sign up.” You’ll then be directed to select your purchase option and pay for the selected class.

Are there any discounts for classes?

Yes. We offer a 20% discount for active and veteran military and public service individuals, a 30% discount for current students, and a 25% discount for professional dancers.

Please reach out to info@urbanitydancechicago.com for more information on how to apply the discount to your class(es).

If I am not able to make one of the classes, is there an option to make it up?

If you know you will not be able to make it to a class, please contact us in advance at info@urbanitydancechicago.com and we will do our best to work with you to schedule a make-up class.

What do I wear to class?

We recommend athletic, comfortable clothes, but you can wear whatever you’re most comfortable dancing/moving in.

Do I need professional dance shoes for class?

No. While we recommend dance shoes, students are encouraged to wear soft-soled shoes (or athletic shoes with little traction) so you can easily move on the studio floor.

If I take the same class topic for a second time, will the content be the same?

No. While the theme/name of the class may be the same throughout the year, the content will always be different to encourage students to continue practicing the same skills.

If I cannot commit to attending classes weekly, do you offer other opportunities for me to learn and practice dance skills?

Yes! At our studio, take advantage of weekender events, which allow you to learn in-depth techniques from a variety of styles from zouk to bachata, as well as dance socials hosted monthly to practice your skills.

We also offer pre-party classes before our dance socials, allowing you to learn a new style or pick up new moves at our studio. Check out our upcoming Special Events for more information.

Who are the class instructors?

Click here to learn more about our incredibly talented staff and the classes they teach. All of our instructors are carefully selected to teach the latest trends and techniques while aiming to foster an inclusive and encouraging class environment.

What benefits are offered for taking classes at Urbanity Dance Chicago?

Registered students can bring a guest and receive one free entry for each of our dance socials. So the next time you join us for a social, be sure to bring a friend!
